A major national ‘knitting’ fair is coming to Coventry

Many of us have taken up hobbies during confinement to curb our boredom.

Some of us have taken up fitness, some have worked on their cooking skills while others have taken up arts and crafts like knitting.

If you’re one of the many people who have fallen in love with this popular pastime, an exciting showcase is coming to town.

The National Wool Show is set to come to Coventry, with over 150 exhibits, workshops and live demonstrations showcasing the best in crochet and knitting.

The event, set up by family business Knit & Yarn based in Leamington, is expected to bring in over 5,000 a day with an exciting lineup of merchandise in store.

There will be independent retailers, major and international suppliers selling a variety of products including yarn, hand dyed yarn, crochet and felting for all your knitting and crochet needs.

Shelley Rothwell, owner of Knit & Yarn, says the therapeutic qualities of knitting and the positive benefits it can have on mental health have led to its resurgence.

For many years Shelley traveled around the country and realized there hadn’t been a major trade show to visit in the Midlands – so she decided to start the National Wool Show.

She said: “We have seen more and more people getting into knitting and crochet since the first lockdown and that has led to a resurgence of retailers specializing in anything associated with wool products.

“The mental health benefits of knitting or crocheting have been highlighted and it has helped many people escape the pressures of the world over the past couple of years.

“We are seeing more and more people of all ages picking up thread and needles for the first time.

“I’ve run a wool business in the area for a few years now and in those days I always had to travel up north or to London for trade shows. We have a lot of customers who don’t necessarily want to travel and have decided now would be the perfect time to launch this event in the Midlands.

“We hope the event at Coventry Building Society Arena will be a celebration of all things wool, a chance to meet independent businesses, great traders and like-minded people with a passion for craftsmanship.”

Paul Michael, Commercial Director of the Coventry Building Society Arena, added: “The National Wool Show is an event with huge potential and is being launched at the perfect time to capitalize on the growing popularity of knitting and associated crafts.

“Coventry Building Society Arena has a proven track record as an event incubator and we look forward to working with Shelley to launch this national show here in Coventry.

“Bringing the National Wool Show into the arena is part of the continued expansion of our portfolio of events and the expansion of our footprint in the hobby and leisure markets.”

The National Wool Show will be held at Coventry Building Society Arena on Saturday and Sunday 9th and 10th April.

Tickers are priced at £15 and are on sale now.
