JAMMU: A 10-day workshop for handicrafts instructors conducted under the guidance of Dr. Vikas Gupta, Director of Handicrafts and Loom, Jammu, ended today at Handicrafts Showroom Janipur.

The training workshop was organized for instructors of different crafts such as Phoolkari embroidery, calico printing, staple embroidery, lathe and lacquer and modern art, in collaboration with the school design and Kharkhandhar units of Jammu district.

The aim of the workshop was to introduce new contemporary designs to recent trends and to prepare craft instructors for higher responsibilities as the government plans to create self-employment opportunities in traditional craftsmanship from the region.

Sangoita Dogra (modern art), Shallu Dogra (Phoolkari crafts), Shujat Ali Parray (Sozni crafts), Shivum Thakur (modern art) and Amandeep Singh (designs and packaging) participated as guest teachers.

Special guests, Deputy Director of Planning, Megha Bogia and Deputy Director of Training, Shivi Sharma were also present on the occasion.

The Deputy Director of Handicrafts, Jammu, Sonika Parihar briefed the participants on the importance and usefulness of the workshop and underlined that the handicrafts sector has enormous potential and capacity to create self-employment opportunities.

A total of 36 handicraft instructors from Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Udhampur and Reasi districts participated in the workshop. Officials of Assistant Director Handicrafts, Jammu were also present on the occasion.
