Iis it time to crochet? Considered an outdated hobby just a few years ago, crocheting has grown in popularity since the first Covid-19 lockdown, allowing novices and experts alike to stock up on wardrobe while enjoying a relaxing activity . The craze is such that some of the biggest luxury fashion houses are using this artisanal technique to give a new twist to their most emblematic pieces.

What do Bella Hadid, Dua Lipa and Paloma Elsesser have in common? They all hooked up. Well, sort of, because all of them have been spotted wearing clothes and accessories made using this technique, which dates back centuries. And in doing so, these three fashion icons have committed no fashion faux pas, quite the contrary. Instead, they have their finger on the pulse of a trend that everyone will soon be embracing.

Granny doilies…

First of all, forget all the cliché ideas about crocheting for baby boomers. Crocheting was in vogue long before that, starting in the early 1900s, so it ran the gamut among grandparents, and even great-grandparents, of Millennials. But, at the time, it was mainly used to make home textiles: think of Grandma’s famous placemats and doilies, a must. Long neglected, crochet made a big comeback a few years ago, driven by the craze for everything related to DIY, but its rise is also directly linked to an event that we could all have done without. Indeed, the pandemic has helped restore the image of this forgotten technique. So while some people have started exercising to get through this difficult time more easily, others have turned to activities they previously didn’t have the time – or the patience – to do in their lives. day, filled with an endless cycle of commuting and work. . With needle and thread, people began making blankets, tablecloths, hats and other accessories during months of social distancing, simultaneously elevating crochet to the status of a new, ultra-trendy craze, attracting not only baby boomers, but all generations.

…to the TikTok sensation

As such, users of TikTok, the favorite social network of Gen Z and Millennials, have also gone wild for the technique. The hashtag #hook now has no less than 5.8 billion views, and is already used in all sorts of ways. Younger users are especially looking for tutorials, project ideas and challenges. Note that the enthusiasm for crochet is such that the hashtag #crochetaddict has accumulated several tens of millions of views. And the videos can be quite surprising, as people are no longer limited to the all-too-obvious doilies and swimsuits. Now they are completely revamping their wardrobes. While some didn’t take long to become accomplished crocheters, others found plenty of time to learn how to master this old-school technique. Instagram and TikTok accounts dedicated entirely to crochet are also multiplying at high speed. Granny Crochet, Bella Coco Crochet, Crochet Artists, ppia.crochet, and LoveCrafts Crochet are popular options whether you’re just getting started, looking for inspiration, or just finding pieces to add to your wardrobe.

An appearance at Fashion Week

In recent months, ready-to-wear brands like Jaded London also seem to have succumbed to the crochet trend, offering not only the triangle swimsuits we all know, but also bucket hats, scarves, tops, jackets, dresses, and even reconnecting with the essential “granny square” which is also a hit on social networks. The craze could have ended there, but some of the biggest fashion houses decided to put the hook on the catwalks of Fashion Week.
For summer 2022, for example, the Chloé label presented a crocheted it-bag which, with its rainbow stripes and removable shoulder strap, is likely to seduce more than one fashion fan. And the luxury brand is not the only one to take ownership of the trend, which is flourishing in all the fashion capitals. At this point, it seems that everything is in place for this once outdated activity to rise to the rank of a new fashion icon.
