Free Panda Knitting Pattern

This free panda knitting pattern gives you all the steps you need to create an adorable stuffed panda in two different sizes. Make them in pairs or choose from the larger panda which is around 35cm or the smaller panda which is around 25cm tall.

You’ll find the full knitting instructions below, including a step-by-step guide on how to make up these adorable pandas.

You will need

Little Panda (height about 25cm)

  • A 50g ball of Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino in each of Black 300 (A) and White 100 (B).
  • Pair of 2.75 mm knitting needles.

    Big Panda (height about 35cm)

    • One 50g skein of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran in Black 300 (A) and two skeins in Ecru 25 (B).
    • Pair of 4mm knitting needles.

      Both designs

      • Washable toy stuffing.
      • Black felt scraps and matching sewing thread.
      • Two small safety eyes per panda (see pattern notes below).

        Tensions

28 sts and 58 rows in Baby Cashmerino on needles n° 2.75 and 18 sts and 38 rows in Cashmerino Aran on needles n° 4, both at 10 cm in garter stitch.

The tensions don’t need to be exact, but the fabric should be firm so the padding doesn’t show and the body parts retain their shape.

          To compensate

Join the back of the body to the front of the body, leaving the edge of the neck open. Stuff firmly and pass a thread around the neckline, pull slightly upwards and fasten off. Sew the ears to the head. Sew the head to the body at the neckline. Fold each arm and each leg in half, join the seam leaving a gap, tightly fill and close the gap. Sew the arms and legs in place to the body.

          Work on facial features

When making toys, the most important thing is facial features, it’s what makes a toy attractive; look at the photos to see where to position everything.

Using the templates below, cut out 2 eye patches for each panda from felt. As the felt is reversible, simply flip a patch over for a mirror image.

Make a small hole in each patch and insert the eyes, securing them with the back plate (see pattern notes, above). Position the patches on either side of the muzzle and sew securely in place.

For the nose, cut a flattened triangle out of felt and sew in place. Then, using thin black yarn or embroidery floss, work out the mouth.
