“We created the 2022 Lion Brand Culture Report to capture the excitement we’re seeing around knitting and crocheting in culture,” said Samantha Brunson, Lion Brand’s social media manager.
“Today, research shows that knitting and crocheting help relieve stress through the soothing, repetitive motions of craftsmanship and by helping people reach a creative outlet that produces tangible, valuable products.”
The best part? You don’t have to be a lifelong knitter to reap the mental health benefits. Creators of all skill levels (even beginners!) can enjoy this productive hobby.

CURRENT KNIT TREND:
1. Spatial dyes:
“Tie-dye has been trending for a while now, and we’re thrilled to see a completely new take on the multicolored look, this time with a psychedelic twist,” said Jessica Hendrickson, design director at Lion Brand.
“I also love the versatility of this trend. You can go head-to-toe with a knit dress or go for a little flare with a cropped cardigan.
2. Year 2000 + Hook:
Y2K fashion is trending with bare midriff tops, low rise jeans and feathers all the rage.
Another fad making its way into our closets just in time for warmer weather is the bucket hat – with a twist: they’re crocheted, one seen on Hailey Bieber.
“This trend can be worn all year round!” says Alexandra Tavel, the knitwear designer behind Two of Wands.
“We’ve seen wool, cashmere or plush bucket hats for a plush version of this trend for winter and brightly colored cotton versions for summer.”
Floral prints are always popular in spring/summer. Take the trend to the next level with a knit shape.
It can be a sweater, a skirt or even a bathing suit! Lion Brand has a crochet bag pattern so you can make your own.
“We’re seeing new versions of a classic staple,” says Samantha Brunson. “We always see more flowers as we approach the spring and summer months, but this year they look set to be on display all year round.”
Many of us have found solace in nostalgic fads when the future was unclear during the pandemic.
According to Lion Brand, nostalgic designs like “Granny Squares” continue to attract a growing fan base among designers, models, celebrities and creators.
“It’s so fun to see this classic all over the mainstream media,” says Jessica Hendrickson.
“From jackets and dresses to pillows and afghans, you can really create anything with these little squares. And the best part is, they’re incredibly beginner friendly!”

5. Connection to the global community:
Pandemic holidays have led many people to take up new hobbies.
According to Lion Brand, the global maker community has connected like never before during lockdowns, and a new generation is helping makers connect with each other.
The sisters behind Knitting—Andrea Cull and Alison Yates—designed an app that helps knitters find patterns and master even the most difficult projects.
6. Home comfort anywhere:
Over the past couple of years, comfortable clothing has become essential as almost everyone has been working from home.
After more than two years of sweatpants, slippers and robes, heels are taking over soft knit shoes.
