The Adult Independent Living Department of the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD) has launched an exclusive vocational training program in hand embroidery for young women with disabilities. This initiative aims to promote professional skills, which would allow them to access economic independence and social inclusion.

This training will allow candidates to benefit from the 4% of job reservations notified in the Official Journal, said a press release. Apparel industry experts will impart technical knowledge to enrolled students.

This course falls under the Disability Act Implementation Program and the program has been approved by the Disability Skills Council. About 10 women with disabilities have registered for this course. Upon successful completion of the program, recipients will obtain a certificate from the Government of India and be matched with job placement agencies or National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation (NHFDC) loan or Muthra loan.

Dr. Gunasekar, rehabilitation officer, explains that there are certain prerequisites, including knowledge of pre-vocational skills.

Special educator and professional instructor C Mala will lead the training for the next three months.
