How to Crochet a Slip Stitch

As part of our GH Stitch Club, we show beginners all the basic knitting and crochet techniques, including this step-by-step tutorial to help you learn how to make a slip stitch.

A slip stitch is a basic technique that can help with any crochet project and can even be useful for knitting. It is the shortest of all stitches and is generally used for working in the round or stitching together. If you saw the adorable granny square top or the daisy square bag in our September 2021 issue, you’ll notice we used a slip stitch to sew the squares together.

How to Slip the Crochet Stitch

Step 1: Once you have found the place in your project to start your slip stitch (for granny squares, this will be where your stitch marker should make the first ring of the square), insert your hook into the first loop.

2nd step: Yarn over and pull through both loops of your hook.

Step 3: Yarn over again and iron once more.
